Where I Stand on Some Issues

The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants, and it provides the further advantage of giving the servants of tyranny a good conscience.

Albert Camus
  • Pandemic Response
    • Parents are responsible for the health and welfare of their children. Parents have the most knowledge and understanding of their children’s physical and emotional needs, as well as their ability to handle changes in routine, isolation, and other disruptions that could occur from a heavy-handed government pandemic response. Giving parents control over their children helps to ensure that their rights and individual autonomy are respected and protected. It’s important for the school to provide guidance and support for parents, but ultimately, the decision on how to protect their children’s health should be left to the parents. Children are not responsible for the health of adults.
  • Curriculum
    • School curriculum should be dictated by the parents and local communities in which schools reside. The legislature and Illinois State Board of Education have grossly overstepped by mandating numerous extra low-value or no-value objectives that do nothing to address the key areas in which students are struggling state-wide; namely math and reading. Parents are the primary caregivers and educators of their children and have the most vested interest in their children’s education. Parental involvement in the development and implementation of curriculum helps to build a sense of community and shared responsibility within the school and leads to better communication and collaboration between parents, teachers, and administrators.
