The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants, and it provides the further advantage of giving the servants of tyranny a good conscience.
Albert Camus
- Pandemic Response
- Parents are responsible for the health and welfare of their children. Parents have the most knowledge and understanding of their children’s physical and emotional needs, as well as their ability to handle changes in routine, isolation, and other disruptions that could occur from a heavy-handed government pandemic response. Giving parents control over their children helps to ensure that their rights and individual autonomy are respected and protected. It’s important for the school to provide guidance and support for parents, but ultimately, the decision on how to protect their children’s health should be left to the parents. Children are not responsible for the health of adults.
- Curriculum
- School curriculum should be dictated by the parents and local communities in which schools reside. The legislature and Illinois State Board of Education have grossly overstepped by mandating numerous extra low-value or no-value objectives that do nothing to address the key areas in which students are struggling state-wide; namely math and reading. Parents are the primary caregivers and educators of their children and have the most vested interest in their children’s education. Parental involvement in the development and implementation of curriculum helps to build a sense of community and shared responsibility within the school and leads to better communication and collaboration between parents, teachers, and administrators.
Where do you stand regarding CRT, transgender issues, and school choice/vouchers?
Hi Bill!
Critical Race Theory (CRT) is rooted in Marxism. It’s antithetical to the vision I have of America and I’m opposed to it, especially in our schools.
Transgender issues:
I believe that adults have the freedom to do whatever they want without harming anyone else. I’ll defend the rights of those to do so.
BUT, I don’t think that government should be involved in dictating how schools should operate in terms of sports, locker rooms/showers, bathrooms, etc. Boys and girls shouldn’t be forced to share locker rooms.
School choice/vouchers:
I am firmly in support of school choice/vouchers/etc. While Nettle Creek is an amazing school that we can all be very proud of, not all schools are like that. We only have to look about 50-60 miles away to see the disaster that is the Chicago Public School system. They are spending egregious amounts of taxpayer money and failing those children. Kids that attend a failing public school deserve the opportunity to take their taxpayer money and go somewhere that succeeds.
People will keep their money in great public schools. If a school performs poorly, you better believe it will lose money until it improves. There are many public colleges in Illinois that compete against each other to attract students. Why then would we not want the same for our younger children?
Nettle Creek is an amazing school and is the specific reason we moved to this area. Nettle Creek outperforms most schools in our state while spending per pupil is much less than many larger districts; that is something every taxpayer in our district should applaud.
Fantastic, this is who I want representing our schools whether in my district or anywhere. These topics and tedd see ponded is what will strengthen us as a local, state b n action and world. Thank you Brett!!!
Thanks Mike!
